Care for a Coffee Summary
⚠️ Problem
During the month of March rates of domestic violence increased up to 38.7% in some Sydney regions.
☕ Solution
Care for a coffee was a side project I designed over a weekend in the midst of COVID-19 #stayathome orders.
I made this website for those who hadn’t taken a financial hit and missed their caffeine hit. A fun, easy way to grab a virtual coffee & help those experiencing homelessness and domestic violence.
💖 Why it matters
Asking people to stay home, relies on the assumption that every home is a happy home. But what happens when you're asked to isolate at home with an abuser? If you're a child from an abusive home that just lost schools safe haven?
Care for a Coffee Behind The Scenes
Process
Partner →I contacted the Women and Girls Emergency Shelter in Redfern, NSW to be the beneficiaries of the website donations, and linked the e-commerce portal directly to their bank account.
Visual design →After some ideation I chose pixel art as the theme, as I loved that it leaned into the ‘virtual’ asthetic. I began by designing a set of common drinks that mirror a coffee menu at a cafe; flat white, long black, matcha. These were all along the $3-5 price point, but I wanted to create something magical to encourage donors to give more.
User experience design →Meet the ‘unicoffee’. This mythical drink quickly became the most popular drink coming in at $10. Once purchased, visitors would receive a thank you email, featuring their imaginary virtual coffee order gif. and an option to share to socials. I chose Shopify to host as I was interested in giving it a whirl however found the functionality more prescriptive and expensive than Squarespace.
